King of the apps….for now anyway
January 28th, 2011

From humble beginnings and as a last-ditch attempt by a small, Finland based mobile game development house called ‘Rovio,’ to save their business, Angry Birds has now reached extraordinary heights. In two years, the app’s been downloaded over 50 million times. Not only is the app the top seller on iTunes, they are now producing versions of the game for the other major gaming platforms – Xbox, Playstation and Wii. There is also talk of a range of ‘Angry Bird’ soft toys, an ‘Angry Birds’ board game and even an ‘Angry Birds’ cartoon being produced.

GNILLEY is a game concept created by a small freeware game developer, ‘Radix’. Presented at ‘Game Jam Sydney 2010′, the game allows the user to control the main character and defeat enemies via voice control. The louder you shout/scream, the more aggressive the attack. Genius idea and a very amusing presentation. Love it!

SCVNGR, which makes a mobile game with real-world challenges, has a playdeck. It is a deck of cards listing nearly 50 different game mechanics that can be mixed and matched to create the foundation for different types of games. I’ve republished the accompanying document below, which should be interesting to anybody trying to inject a gaming dimension into their products. (more…)
