
From humble beginnings and as a last-ditch attempt by a small, Finland based mobile game development house called ‘Rovio,’ to save their business, Angry Birds has now reached extraordinary heights. In two years, the app’s been downloaded over 50 million times. Not only is the app the top seller on iTunes, they are now producing versions of the game for the other major gaming platforms – Xbox, Playstation and Wii. There is also talk of a range of ‘Angry Bird’ soft toys, an ‘Angry Birds’ board game and even an ‘Angry Birds’ cartoon being produced.
GNILLEY is a game concept created by a small freeware game developer, ‘Radix’. Presented at ‘Game Jam Sydney 2010′, the game allows the user to control the main character and defeat enemies via voice control. The louder you shout/scream, the more aggressive the attack. Genius idea and a very amusing presentation. Love it!

This post is a bit of a follow on from our previous ‘Advertising on YouTube’ post which looked at some of the creative ways in which YouTube targets’ specific demographics. This is another great execution by NZ Army that has incorporated a number of different games into their YouTube channel to encourage and attract potential recruits. The games are simple but fun, check them out for yourself here.

Some companies keep a playbook of product tips, tricks and trade secrets. Zynga has an internal playbook, for instance, that is a collection of “concepts, techniques, know-how and best practices for developing successful and distinctive social games”. Zynga’s playbook has entered the realm of legend and was even the subject of a lawsuit.
SCVNGR, which makes a mobile game with real-world challenges, has a playdeck. It is a deck of cards listing nearly 50 different game mechanics that can be mixed and matched to create the foundation for different types of games.
